#12 Nithya Amirtham - affordable vegetarian restaurant

It was a regular hot, sunny evening when I took my weekly walk around mylapore mada streets. I had come across this restaurant for quite sometime and that day I was drawn towards that place as I was more than hungry! I was exhausted! 

At the entrance, you have the chaats, sandwiches and traditional snacks counter. I have to say their panipuris are delicious. On the traditional snacks counter, you can get sweet poli, sweet panayaram and kaara panayaram. They do not have much variety in their sandwiches.


After gulping some delicious puris, I entered the restaurant. Towards my left were an array of sweets and savouries. It instantly reminded me of a North Indian sweet shop. They had a quite a variety of sweets and savouries. The diners could either have a normal dining or a temple view dining which is situated in the first floor.

To my surprise, where ever I saw, I was able to see mostly only thathas and paatis (Hardly any youngsters :( ...) It was such a cute sight to see them eating their rava dosas and chatting. Of course, there were a few middle-aged people too having their evening "tiffin".




When I went through the menu card, they had almost everything! Almost! What attracts huge people over there are definitely their affordable rates. Their rates and taxes are very nominal. The waiters were very courteous and guided me to choose what to eat.

I went for Kaara Paniyaram and hot tea. It was past 7.30, but I can never ever say no to tea :)

The hot hot Panayarams arrived in no time. There were four pieces with a tomato chutney-based dip, which were really tasty. However, my tea took a very long time to arrive (I still don't know why). Glimpsing the menu card again, I could not resist my favourite mushrooms and ended up ordering a Mushroom Tikka takeaway. The funny part was that both my takeaway and my tea arrived at almost the same time.



I paid my bills, bid adieu to the place and left home with hot tikka in my hand. When I went home and opened my tikkas, they were looking so appetizing. The mushrooms were stuffed with a paneer filling and tandoored. Ooooh!!! Every bite of the tikka was so succulent. The tikkas were accompanied with a pudhina chutney. 

Final verdict: This place is a must visit with family. I would recommend you to try the temple-view dining . The rates are very economical for the good quality food they offer.

Tip: Be there early as the places are filled up pretty soon! :)

#10 Pakwan - The royal dining experience

Pakwan, translating to 'dish' in Hindi, is a restaurant located at the heart of Chennai, T. Nagar. The restaurant, as per their Facebook page, claims to 'give your taste buds the royal dining experience in the best of vegetarian north Indian, Italian and Chinese cuisines with an ambience that looks just wow'. I was more than eager to visit this place to have my lunch to satisfy my taste buds on a lazy Sunday afternoon.
