#5 Makhana –The Wonder Food

Makhana

Last week while on my regular shopping, I came across this wonder food called “Makhana”. What immediately grabbed my attention was it resembling our all-time favorite “popcorn”. When I asked the shopkeeper what was that made of, he told me they were puffed lotus seeds. I started laughing initially, but later on after coming to know of its amazing health benefits, I wanted to share this wonder food with you all.

What is Makhana?

Makhana, its Indian name, also called as Fox nuts or Lotus seeds, is taken from Euryale Fox which grows majorly on stagnant water. These seeds can be eaten as such or roasted. I basically prefer the roasted version.

What is so wonderful about Makhana?

Makhana is low-fat, high-carbohydrate food which can be used as an ideal food for people who are in their weight loss regimen. As it is high in magnesium and low in sodium, it is very effective for people having high blood pressure or diabetes.

Did you know?
Lotus seeds (Makhana) contain an enzyme called L-isoaspartyl methyltransferase which helps in anti-aging by repairing crushed proteins.

The seeds are extremely useful for the kidneys, spleen, and even bones. Yes! You read it right! Makhana is a calcium-rich food, thus preventing arthritis and other bone-related problems. For the vegetarians out there, these fox nuts are high in protein and therefore you can meet your daily protein requirements.

How can you eat Makhana?
  •  Roast them or puff them
  •  Add them to Kheers
  •  Add them to Dal Makhani
  •  Make Makhana Raita
  •  Add them to Biryani or Pulao.

So what more are you waiting for? Go to your nearest store and grab that pack of Makhana right away!
